Recently while flipping through AFAR magazine, I came across this photo. The image was taken on the Original Queen Mary ship in 1936 and I found myself captivated with the elegance, grace and sheer stunning presence of this woman in red. Our lives have become so casual – and as much as I love that, there is a part of me that wishes there was more elegance in our daily lives.
I see this happening in the design world too. We have been going through a simplification of design – from rough and raw textures (think concrete and steel) to deconstructed attention to detail – all prevalent in furniture and design that are reminiscent of post-war industrialism.
Watching the markets, I am happy to see a slight hint to a return of grace, opulence and refinement of both products and interiors. That’s probably what captivated me about this photo.
