How To | Style A Cocktail Table
Okay, we’ll admit, styling a cocktail table isn’t the easiest task!
It takes some creativity and there is no “right way” or “only way” to do it.
This is definitely a challenge we love accepting because it’s a way to display the personalities of the people who live in your home. The items that you choose to use can reflect who you are, where you’ve traveled, what you enjoy doing, and so on. So, how do you find the right accessories? How many items do you use? And for goodness sake, where do you begin?
We’ve gathered a few of our favorite cocktail tables and ottomans to share with you for inspiration. If you are looking to switch up your decor, keep scrolling! We have helpful tips to share with you.
There are so many different approaches to take when styling any piece in your home. Our advice would be to start by determining how many items your cocktail table needs. The size and shape of your table will most likely dictate this. As I’m sure you guessed, smaller tables will not need as many items as a larger table might require.
Square or rectangular tables allow more flexibility in the types of accessories you use. It’s harder to use rectangular accessories on round tables because you don’t want any corners hanging off at any point. With that being said, you can still use rectangular objects on your round cocktail table, you just need to be aware of the sizes you’re dealing with.
Simple enough, right?
Not everyone has a table in their seating area; you may have an ottoman instead – which is equally great. For our friends with ottomans, I highly suggest using a tray. A tray gives you a base to add your favorite décor items to, as well as a guarantee that everything will be level and stable.
With most cocktail tables and ottomans, we like to use an odd number of accessories. There’s just something about odd numbers that creates the perfect balance. With a small space to fill with objects, like a tray, we usually use the rule of three.
After you’ve determined how many items you can add to your cocktail table or ottoman, it’s time to select your accessories and start layering them. This is usually the hardest part of the process – there’s just so many options in the world of accessories! Here are a few accessory suggestions:
Live (or fake) greenery
Candles and other small objects
Vases and other tall items
The next order of business is layering all of your accessories to create a beautiful grouping. Finding the perfect combination of objects is always a challenge and often takes several tries. Start by adding three objects and build from there. You’ll want to make sure that the objects you’ve added are of varying heights and forms.
Using three vases of the same height does not give as great of an affect as three vases of different heights. But, with this same idea in mind, using three vases of different heights does not give as great of an affect as a tall vase, a mid-height floral arrangement and a short sculptural element. It’s all about variety and balance here, people!
If you’re having trouble finding items that work well together at varying heights, use books to your advantage! Stack a few books under a floral arrangement, or any other object for that matter, to control the heights of your accessories.
The last step in this creative process is to keep arranging your accessories until you’re feelin’ it. You’ll get it – I promise! If you’re stumped, walk away and try again tomorrow. Pinterest is always a good place to turn to for inspiration, too. I created a Pin Board to collect all of my accessorizing ideas and inspo. You can check it out here.
