What Inspires Christi Barbour
I am often asked where I find inspiration for my projects.
The answer is easy and one word: Travel.
Inspired by my dear grandmother who lived 10 months past her 100th birthday, I watched in fascination through the eyes of a child, as she traveled the globe – literally – checking off her bucket list.
Oh, and did I mention she was single?
This amazing and independent woman saw all seven continents of the world, that’s right, all seven. She visited countless countries and hundreds of cities observing their culture, eating their food and speaking to locals.
One of my very favorite memories as a child was what we called movie night.
“Mom“ as we all affectionately called her, would set up a slide projector in her living room and show a room full of cousins the countless slides of her travels, describing in detail each image. Admittedly I would complain – where are the people? The majority of her images were pictures of the city, buildings, details, landscapes and life with a just a handful of people who managed to make it into the photo. Scroll through my iPhone now and 90% of my travel photos are the same.
I get it. She was inspired by the beauty of history, stories of architecture and the culture of these areas,
just as they inspire me now.
I am grateful for her guidance, it graces my life every day.
Now, I find great joy in the planning of travel every bit as much as the journey itself. And when I am lucky enough to be on a journey I am constantly scanning – looking – identifying things that bring me joy.
Those are the things that inspire me.
Stunning architecture, beautiful landscapes – no matter country or city – they both have their
beauty, colors, patterns, textures.
Yes, I love to travel. And, I equally love to come home.
In its truest form, the word HOME represents, the word LOVE: to be with my loved ones, to be surrounded by things I love and to experience love…this is home to me.
